Children's Christmas 'Fat' Worries

Tuesday 06 January 2004

More than a third (36%) of 11-15 year olds are worried that they might put on too much weight over Christmas and three quarters (74%) anticipate that their diet will be fairly unhealthy during the holidays, according to research conducted by the MORI Social Research Institute.

The survey, for Developing Patient Partnerships, shows top of the list for over a quarter of 11-15 year olds of things to change about their health, after being able to run faster and having fewer coughs and colds.

Three in five children (60%) find it confusing to know what a healthy diet is and over two in five (43%) find it difficult to find places to exercise and run around outside school, which makes addressing weight worries a growing problem for a lot of young people (1).

  1. c.54% do not feel it is often difficult to find places to exercise or run around outside school time.

Technical details

MORI Social Research Institute conducted the research on behalf of Developing Patient Partnerships. A representative sample of 414 children aged 11-15 was interviewed by telephone between 17 November and 3 December 2003 across Great Britain. The data have been weighted to the known profile of 11-15 year olds in Britain.
