Third Sector Research Unit

Thursday 17 April 2008

Ipsos MORI's well-established Third Sector Research Unit — an enthusiastic and dedicated team of researchers with years of experience and in-depth knowledge of the not-for-profit sector — have been busy measuring public opinion on behalf of charity clients, to inform national and international campaigns.

Public opinion drives policy and therefore helps to support campaigns. We use robust surveys to gauge opinion or experience among the public, or specific audiences, on a range of issues, increasingly in countries across the world as well as in Great Britain.

In spring 2007, ahead of the IWC (International Whaling Commission) meeting in Alaska at which members voted on whether commercial whaling should be permitted or banned, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) commissioned Ipsos MORI to explore attitudes to Commercial Whaling in the Caribbean. We conducted face-to-face interviews among residents and tourists in six Caribbean countries. In total, c.3,000 Caribbean residents and c.1,800 tourists were interviewed in Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent. The research showed Caribbean residents and tourists to be against a return to commercial whaling and were used to lobby delegates in the run-up to 2007 IWC voting.

Later in the year we carried out research in Great Britain, Ethiopia, South Africa and Kyrgyzstan on behalf of the British Red Cross to measure young people's attitudes to and awareness of HIV and AIDS. In each country, 300 young people aged 14-25 were interviewed and the research was used to inform a media campaign which highlighted the stigma attached to HIV among young people. The findings generated widespread media coverage, including a front page exclusive on the Metro.
