“What Matters to Staff in the NHS” is a wide-ranging research study commissioned by the Department of Health that explores the emotional motivators of staff across a range of NHS organisations. The research identifies major factors contributing to staff engagement and motivation to provide high quality patient care, and creates a clear picture of which areas managers need to focus on to improve how staff feel about their workplace, their colleagues and their roles.

Technical Details
Paper self-completion questionnaires were sent to 32,000 staff working in NHS Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) and General Practices. Overall, 9,080 NHS staff completed the questionnaire between 6 August and 7 September 2007, giving a response rate of 28%. A survey also took place among 21 Independent Sector Treatments Centres (ISTCs). A sample of 1,640 ISTC staff received a questionnaire, and 483 completed the questionnaire between 6 September and 1 October 2007, giving a response rate of 29%.
The design of the survey questionnaire built on an exploratory phase, consisting of a literature review and qualitative research. A total of 40 discussion groups took place involving over 200 staff, complemented by depth interviews among senior managers and stakeholders in a range of NHS Trusts, SHAs and ISTCs.
