This scepticism is particularly apparent with the NHS, for which public expectations have reached a record low.

According to the latest Ipsos MORI Government Delivery Index, two in five British adults (40%) think that the Government's policies will improve the state of Britain's economy in the long-term, although slightly more (46%) disagree, giving a net optimism score of -6. This is slightly higher than the net score of -13 in May 2006.

It appears that the British public are continuing to be gloomy about the future of the economy and public services, according to the latest Deloitte/Ipsos MORI Government Delivery Index. Expectations among the public were generally at a historic low in early 2006, and this level of pessimism has broadly been maintained in the months since.

Two in five British adults (38%) think that the Government's policies will improve the state of Britain's economy in the long-term, while 48% disagree. Fewer are optimistic about the public services, with one in three (32%) thinking that the Government's policies will improve public services, while a majority (55%) disagree with this.

The latest Deloitte / Ipsos MORI Government Delivery Index provides little Christmas cheer for the Government at the end of 2005. Although voters have becoming slightly more optimistic about the economy, they are still negative overall about the long term prospects for the economy and public services, and expectations of the NHS are now at their lowest level since 2002.

The latest Deloitte / MORI Delivery Index shows a rise in optimism over the economy and public services after the General Election, continuing the steady upward trend since 2003. For the first time since May 2002, people are more positive than negative about the government's long-term economic policies, and the proportion of optimists has risen from 43% in February to 47% after the election.

More of the public are optimistic about the government's policies for improving the economy since May 2002, according to MORI's quarterly Delivery Index research for The Financial Times published today. The survey, undertaken between 25th and 28th February shows that 43% of the public agree that "in the long term, this government's policies will improve the state of Britain's economy". This represents a three point increase since last November and an eleven point increase from New Labour's low in July 2003.

MORI's latest Delivery Index survey, conducted for the Financial Times, shows that the public remain divided over whether the Government's policies will improve the state of the economy. The public also remain sceptical about the Government's ability to improve public service in the long term, although trends on both these areas have improved since 2003.
