The Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity (SPARC) programme has reached its mid-point. The four year programme, funded by BBSRC and EPSRC, is helping build capacity and bring researchers closer to end-users. In practice, the programme is attracting a wide-range of stakeholders (older people, carers and clinicians, as well as scientists) in order to fund research that is tailored to solving specific problems encountered by older people.

The number of elderly people in the population is predicted to rise over the coming decade. This is partly due to the post-war baby boom generation reaching retirement age, but also to life expectancy for men and women predicted to increase. This general trend can be seen right across the developed world. The statistics are striking.

When it comes to finding out what the general public think about the future direction of research into ageing, prevention of age-related illness is the single most important priority for the general public, coming ahead of research into cures, or of research into managing conditions. This was one of the key themes to come out of a new study into public attitudes towards BBSRC- and MRC-funded research on ageing, under the auspices of RCUK.
