Measuring Outcomes: Patient Reported Outcome Measures
PROMs (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures) can be incorporated into patient surveys, or conducted as a survey in its own right, to assess the impact of care, treatment and services on health outcomes. Pre and Post surveys can be undertaken to measure patients’ experience and clinical status (in the ‘Pre’ study), and experience and outcome (in the ‘Post’ study). Thus, the effectiveness of clinical intervention from the patient’s own perspective can be assessed - i.e. Do patients report that they are feeling better?
Ipsos MORI, in collaboration with academic partners, can produce information on the patterns of care and outcomes experienced by patients with particular conditions.
Reports can be prepared from a national perspective, with recommendations aimed at improving the care experience and outcomes. Trust-specific reports can also be prepared describing patterns of care and outcomes on a dedicated website which can provide individual acute trusts or PCTs with their results. Results can also be disseminated to professional stakeholders via newsletters and conferences.
Ipsos MORI is currently running a national patient outcomes audit in England and Wales in partnership with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Full details of the audit can be found here.
