Local Control and Local Variation in the NHS

In 2008/9 Ipsos MORI undertook some research for the Social Market Foundation looking at public perceptions and attitudes to National Standards in relation to local variation in the NHS.

The analysis revealed that although there is still a consensus in favour of a nationally based NHS, the public supports locally tailored services. In addition, the research found that the key to allaying people’s concerns about service change is transparency in decision-making and a guiding principle of fairness.
