Teachers omnibus

Survey of teachers In England and Wales

What is the Ipsos MORI Teachers Omnibus?

It is the only Omnibus survey of its type. We interview a representative sample of 900-1,000 maintained primary and secondary school teachers across England and Wales. It is a multi-client survey and is therefore a highly cost-effective way of reaching this audience: administration costs are shared between all the clients who buy space in the questionnaire but your questions are confidential to you. Interviews are done by telephone and last a maximum of 15 minutes.

What can I use the Teachers Omnibus for?

You can use it for a one-off exploration of teachers' views or experiences on just about any topic, but it is also an ideal way of tracking changes in teachers' attitudes.

Last year, Futurelab used the Teachers Omnibus to investigate teachers' attitudes to the use of computer games designed primarily for entertainment. We found that:

  • 59% of teachers would consider using mainstream computer games in the classroom for educational purposes
  • almost one in three teachers already used computer games in their teaching
  • teachers think game-playing offers a range of benefits, including helping to develop players' motor-cognitive skills.

The findings were part of Futurelab's consultations which fed into their Teaching with Games initiative, a year-long project investigating the place of mainstream commercial computer games in the classroom. The findings were widely reported in the national media as well as among specialist electronic gaming audiences.

Is the sample representative?

Yes. The sample is representative of teachers by sex, age, phase (primary/secondary) and government office region. So that we get a good range of views, we also set 'soft' quotas on things like length of teaching experience, level of responsibility and subject specialism (secondary teachers only).

When does the Teachers Omnibus run?

The sixth wave of the Teachers Omnibus ran in the Autumn Term of 2007.

If you would like to put questions in the next survey, please contact us as soon as convenient.
